It spans over nine nights and ten days. Navratri is observed to celebrate the victory of \u201c\ud835\udc06\ud835\udc28\ud835\udc1d\ud835\udc1d\ud835\udc1e\ud835\udc2c\ud835\udc2c \ud835\udc03\ud835\udc2e\ud835\udc2b\ud835\udc20\ud835\udc1a\u201d over the powerful demon Mahishasura i.e. the victory of \u201cGood over Evil\u201d.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The word Navratri is derived from two Sanskrit words\u2014’Nava’ meaning nine and ‘Ratri’ meaning night. These nine days are dedicated to Durga and her nine avatars. Each day is associated with the incarnation of the Goddess.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The first day of Navratri also known as \ud835\udde3\ud835\uddff\ud835\uddee\ud835\ude01\ud835\uddf6\ud835\uddfd\ud835\uddee\ud835\uddf1\ud835\uddee, this day is associated with \ud835\udc12\ud835\udc21\ud835\udc1a\ud835\udc22\ud835\udc25\ud835\udc1a\ud835\udc29\ud835\udc2e\ud835\udc2d\ud835\udc2b\ud835\udc22 (“Daughter of Mountain”), an incarnation of Parvati. It is in this form that Durga is worshipped as the wife of Shiva, she is depicted as riding the bull, Nandi, with a trishula in her right hand and lotus in her left. \ud835\udc12\ud835\udc21\ud835\udc1a\ud835\udc22\ud835\udc25\ud835\udc1a\ud835\udc29\ud835\udc2e\ud835\udc2d\ud835\udc2b\ud835\udc22 is considered to be the direct incarnation of Mahakali. After the self-immolation of Goddess Sati, Goddess Parvati took birth as the daughter of Lord Himalaya. In Sanskrit, Shail means the mountain, and the Goddess was known as Shailputri, the daughter of the mountain.<\/div>

Brahmacharini is worshipped for emancipation or moksha and endowment of peace and prosperity. Depicted as walking bare feet and holding a japamala (rosary) and a kamandala (pot) in her hands, she symbolizes bliss and calm. She is worshipped on the second day of Navratri. Brahmacharini is the Goddess who performed \u2018Tapa\u2019 meaning penance. Brahma-Tapa, Charini-Performer.<\/div>\n
